AboutVietnam:

What it is?

  • Vietnam is a socialist republic located in the eastern portion of mainland Southeast Asia. It is one of the world’s most populous countries and has one of the fastest-expanding market economies. Historically, Vietnam has a long pattern of adapting ideas and technology from dominant civilizations to serve its own social and economic renovation.

Capital: Hanoi (located in the north).

Largest City: Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon, located in the south).

Borders: Vietnam is bordered by China to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, and the South China Sea to the east and south. It also faces the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest.

Key Geological Features:

The country extends about 1,025 miles from north to south but is as narrow as 30 miles at its midpoint.

  • Annamese Cordillera: A mountain range that dominates the interior, running parallel to the coast and forming a drainage divide between rivers flowing east to the sea and west to the Mekong River.
  • Red River Delta: Located in the north, this triangular alluvial delta is a center for settlement and agriculture.
  • Mekong River Delta: A vast alluvial plain in the south covering approximately 15,400 square miles.
  • Uplands and Massifs: Northern Vietnam features the vast massif extending toward Laos, containing Fan Si Peak, which is the highest point in Vietnam at 10,312 feet.
  • Coastal Plains: A long, relatively narrow plain that connects the two major deltas.
  • Soils: Predominantly reddish podzolic and lateritic soils in the highlands, with rich alluvial soils concentrated in the Mekong and Red River deltas.

Significance:

  • Its position along the South China Sea makes it a key pillar of India’s Act East Policy and a critical partner for Indo-Pacific stability.
  • Emerging as a major global manufacturing center and a key player in regional supply chain resilience.
